South 8 Technologies Selected as Finalist for the 2024 Start Up Energy Transition (SET) Award

The developer of LiGas® electrolyte, which enables unparalleled cold weather performance for lithium-ion batteries while enhancing safety, also named to the SET100 List of 2024

SAN DIEGO – Feb. 29, 2024 – South 8 Technologies (“South 8”), the developer of LiGas®, liquefied gas electrolyte for advanced lithium-ion batteries, has been named as a finalist for the 8th Annual Start Up Energy Transition (“SET”) Award. SET, which supports innovation in the climate tech and energy sector, also recognized South 8 as one of the most promising global energy start-ups in naming it to the 2024 SET100 List in the Clean Energy Generation and Storage category.

The SET Award is an international competition for start-ups developing impactful solutions aimed at accelerating the global energy transition and reversing climate change. Since its inception, the SET award has received more than 3,100 applications from over 100 countries. The SET100 List, a compilation of the top 100 applications, recognizes companies for their role in meeting the demand for sustainable innovations in climate tech. The initiative was first launched in 2017 in collaboration with the World Energy Council to offer young companies a platform to showcase their forward-thinking solutions.

As global demand for electric vehicles and long-duration energy storage systems rises, South 8’s LiGas directly addresses thermal propagation and cold weather – two prominent pain points for lithium-ion battery systems.  Additionally, it enables new materials and manufacturing methods that will increase the amount of energy batteries can store, lower battery costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at cell factories around the world.

“We are thrilled that South 8 has been recognized for our contribution to advancing the energy transition,” said Tom Stepien, CEO of South 8 Technologies. “Our LiGas electrolyte is already disrupting the transportation industry by offering cleaner, safer, and higher-performing advanced lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. In doing so, LiGas enables the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions.” He added, “We congratulate our fellow innovators who are helping industries achieve their net-zero goals.”

The winner of the SET Award will be announced at the annual SET Tech Festival on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, in Berlin, Germany.
