South 8 Named as a Finalist in the World Renowned 2024 Edison Awards™

SAN DIEGO – South 8 Technologies, Inc. (“South 8”), has been named a finalist in the 2024 Edison Awards. The company is being honored in the Commercial Technology category for their Arctic™ LiGas electrolyte.

The Edison Awards™, named after the American inventor Thomas Alva Edison, recognizes some of the most innovative products, business leaders and companies in the world including Steve Jobs, Gwynne Shotwell, Ginni Rometty, Lanzatech, Apple and Lockheed Martin. This prestigious accolade honors excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human centered design and innovation.

South 8’s patented LiGas solves the “fire and ice”™ problem inherent in standard liquid electrolytes used in almost all lithium-ion batteries today. Notable is the greatly reduced risk of fire propagation and industry-leading performance at low ambient temperatures. LiGas’ higher conductivity and lower viscosity over conventional liquid electrolyte enables fast charging and higher energy density cells while fitting into existing cell designs and manufacturing processes.

“Cold weather poses unique challenges for electric vehicles, primarily impacting their battery efficiency and overall range,” said Ryo Tamaki, VP of Products at South 8. “EV batteries operate best within a certain temperature range, and cold temperatures can reduce their ability to store and deliver energy efficiently – as many drivers in Chicago experienced in January 2024. Our LiGas directly addresses these conventional liquid electrolyte shortcomings.”

All nominations are reviewed by the Edison Awards’ Steering Committee and an executive judging body. The panel is comprised of more than 2,000 senior business executives and academics from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, as well as past winners.

Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will be announced at the Edison Awards Gala on Thursday, April 18, 2024 in Fort Myers, Florida, USA.
